Our individual spaces at Artomatic May – June 2012:
Burnt Earth resulted from the collaboration among five people – Beth, Julie, Kirsty, Mary and Matt. We fire our work together in large communal kilns. We like cooperation. We admire the art work we are each doing, as individuals, and value the community we have built around our cooperative firing process. It was natural for us to encourage each other to be part of Artomatic 2012, which is itself a collaboration.
There is a camaraderie that naturally develops among people who work together. Our work as individual artists always always begins as a solitary exploration. However, we have all chosen to work together to collectively finalize our individual visions by firing together as a group. For us, this shared work provides an exchange of techniques and approaches that is as fascinatiing as the exchange of ideas. Although we each form our work independently, the synergy resulting from our shared firing process suffuses our Art in myriad ways. You may notice similar surface treatment, or perhaps a similar glaze palette. This is no accident. Through our collaboration we have each found similar paths to explore as individuals.
The interesting question to ponder is whether we came together as a group because of our similar interests, or if instead we all evolved together because of our collaboration. We feel that both explanations are probably true.
